Download: CEC Advent Guide
The Advent season marks the beginning of the Christian church calendar, and this calendar tells the story of Jesus all year long. Who is Jesus and what did he do? The calendar teaches: he was born (Christmas Day), he died on a cross (Good Friday). and he came back to life (Easter). After Easter, he ascended and the Spirit of Jesus came to the church (Pentecost).
Advent is a time we re-tell the story of Jesus. The word “advent” comes from the Latin adventus for “coming” or “arrival.” We take this time, about four weeks leading up to Christmas, to remember the anticipation that God’s people had for the promised Messiah. We take this time to think about why we need Jesus. We take this time to think about the promises God made and fulfilled in Jesus as well as the promise of Christ’s return.
We hope that this devotional guide will be a helpful tool for you as we celebrate Advent together as a church.
